“When Calls The Heart” Season 7 Finale – Biggest Cliche of All

Let’s talk about “When Calls The Heart“. The show has been running for 7 seasons now and has enchanted us with heart-felt and simple story lines. To me, it is an escape into another era with more pure values that allows me to forget my everyday hardships. Nevertheless, the plot that we have watched all season – the love triangle between Nathan, Elizabeth and Lucas, was nothing original. We have observed a similar situation even in the spin-off series – “When Hope Calls“. And we have seen the final twist in previous seasons of not only this show, but others as well. Which made the finale the biggest cliche of all.

OK, I am starting to think that my perception of romance is flawed. I am always rooting for the guy that does not get the girl in the end. I have already shared with you my disappointment over both the choices Jane from “Jane the Virgin” and Lidia from”Cable Girls” had made. So it did not come as a surprise that Elizabeth would choose Nathan (I still am team “Lucas”). But the way it happened was just sooo predictable and honestly said boring.

We all loved Jack and Elizabeth as a couple, but, honestly, should it be a Mountie again? If a relationship between her and Nathan is in the plans for next season doesn’t it mean that we would see the same plot lines again and again? For example, Elizabeth scared to death when he is doing his job? That would be a repetition. And it is exactly what we saw in the Finale – her running to him after thinking for a second he had been shot. For some of us, fans, Nathan’s character does not have dimension and is just plain boring. According to a fan that posted on the “When Calls the HeartFacebook page Elizabeth is choosing the Mountie uniform over any character traits. I completely agree. May be the writers are thinking this have worked so well in the past, why not use it again? Because Hearties want more – a truly exciting story line.

With Lucas, on the other hand, the story would have the space to grow. Not to mention he is the better fit, in my opinion. He was brave enough to pursue Elizabeth and they did seem to get closer during the course of the season. He had also helped her with the library and her writing career. He constantly encourages her to grow. And he overtook the oil company from Henry mainly to please her, although he knew nothing about this business. Those things matter, at least in my book. What did Nathan do at the same time? The answer is simple: sulked like a little child from whom someone had stolen a candy.

My other problem with this love triangle is that we have seen it already. In last season of “When Hope Calls” Lillian had two love interests, one of them was a Mountie. Sounds familiar? At least, I hope, she will choose Sam. I cannot understand what is so attractive about Mounties, really…

One thing I really liked about the season was Rosemary and Lee’ story. It seemed so genuine, it made my heart melt. I honestly think those two deserve their own show. And please, PLEASE, give them a baby already…

Although the Finale does not necessarily mean that Elizabeth has chosen Nathan, it certainly seems so. I guess, we will have to wait until the Christmas Special. One thing is for sure though – Hearties are getting tired from the absurd love triangle.

Let’s hope resolution is eminent and it is not the cliche we have already seen before…
