The Coolest Themed Bars, Cafes, and Restaurants in Budapest

Budapest is probably one of the most beautiful capitals in Europe. But even if you are not a fan of architecture, a visit there is a must. The city offers something for every taste in terms of the food and beverage industry – from having your coffee surrounded by cute animals to enjoying a sword fight during dinner. Below you can find a list of the establishments that impressed me the most during my last visit to the beautiful Hungarian capital.

The Magic

If you are a Harry Potter fan, this one is an absolute must! It is honestly the best Potter themed cafe I`ve ever been to. The decor is simply stunning with a self-stirring cauldron, enchanted ceiling, sorting hat, and all other kinds of items from the books and movies. The food is also presented in a special way and is ranging from black burgers to mouth-watering deserts that are worthy of any Instagram story. My favorite thing, though, were the drinks as they were served over dry ice which produced a magical mist and really made us feel as part of the wizarding world.

Sir Lancelot

A portion of food at Sir Lancelot

As far as restaurants go, Sir Lancelot is my total favorite in Budapest. The Medieval theme is close to my heart and I really liked the performances you can watch while eating. From knight fights through fire magicians to belly dancers the show is just spectacular. In terms of food you can try a singular dish or a specific menu, which will offer you a real feast. Don’t ask for utensils, though! They were not available in the Middle Ages, so you have to devour your dinner with your hands. Another interesting detail is the large beer is served in a 1-liter mug which I`ve never seen in another place before.

The restaurant is quite busy, so you would definitely need a reservation. For Sir Lancelot’s website, click here.

Baz Beer Bar or Axe Throwing Budapest

Now, if you would like to try something really unique, I would recommend this bar. In the basement, they have set up an axe-throwing area, where you can try your skills in hitting the target. It’s a quite fun activity to do, especially if you are a large group of people – you can compete between each other and see who has the best aim. If, like me, you discover that you totally suck in axe-throwing, don’t worry! The bar upstairs offers a great variety of drinks that you can sip while watching your friends enjoy themselves.

Zoo Cafe

The Zoo Cafe has been one of my favorites since I did my initial training for flight attendant in Budapest in 2017. It definitely hasn’t lost its charm since then. The whole concept is that with your food and drinks the staff brings you different animals to pet or observe. They are changed every 5 minutes so you can enjoy as many cute friends as possible during your stay. Be aware that you can receive a bunny or a Guinea pig, but also a snake or chameleon. There are cats walking all around the cafe and there is even a parrot flying freely overhead! And if you would like to see all the inhabitants – just take a walk around the shop.

If you want to visit, keep in mind this is one of the busiest coffee shops in Budapest, so you have to book quite in advance. For the Zoo Cafe’s website, click here.

Cat Cafe

The Cat Cafe basically has the same concept as the Zoo Cafe, but here you can enjoy the company only of cats. The shop is very well set up and all the inhabitants are simply adorable! It is a nice alternative, if you are scared of snakes or lizards and also it is far less busy than the Zoo Cafe.

Rumpus Tiki Bar

If you are rum fan, that is the place for you! The bar offers not only an amazing decor that will make you feel like you are in Barbados, but a great variety of rum cocktails for every taste. In the menu, you can see how strong a specific drink is and also if it is spicy, bitter, sweet or sour – that makes it easy to choose the best mix for you. Each cocktail is served in a specific for it tiki glass and over dry ice, which makes the presentation quite spectacular (and also Instagrammable). I have tried two different drinks and can say I was pretty pleased with both. I would definitely pay this bar a second visit during my next trip to Budapest.

I suggest booking a table in advance as the bar gets quite full. For Rumpus Tiki Bar’s website, click here.
