I absolutely love, LOVE Halloween! The whole aesthetic of this holiday speaks to my heart. I like the pumpkin lanterns, adore the costumes and just live for the dark and moody vibe. And if the whole of December is about Christmas, October is definitely about Halloween.
So by saying that, it probably made it clear that I am a fan of all the TV shows that do Halloween specials and probably even more of every scary show, released in honor of this holiday. But some of them are especially close to my heart in the spooky season and below is my list of favorites.
5. Ghost Whisperer

Ok, I know this is quite an old series but it is, without a doubt, a favorite. I remember the time when ghost shows were not a big thing, and this one just felt unique. But it was not just the theme that set it out from all the rest – it was the fact that each episode was very well thought out, that Jennifer Love Hewitt performed her part exquisitely and it was able to keep me on the edge of my seat. And I’d never grown bored of it – even after 5 seasons, I still wanted more. Which is impossible to say about some of today’s long-running series.
If you’ve already watched Ghost Whisperer, I suggest Medium. It has a similar theme and is also a quite good TV show.
Short Overview
Melinda Gordon has possessed the gift to be able to communicate with spirits ever since she was a young girl. Now, the dead seek her help to resolve their unfinished business and cross over to the other side.
4. American Horror Story: Murder House and Double Feature

AHS is an absolute classic in the horror genera. To be honest, I am not the biggest fan of the show and for me things just went down after Season 1. But! Despite that Murder House is one of my favorite scary shows of all times. I still remember the excitement of watching it when it first came out in 2011. I thought it is absolute masterpiece with an amazing cast and plot line.
As I said, I am not a fan of the rest of the seasons until Double Feature. It surprised me in a very positive way and I found the idea behind it far more original than its predecessors’. I definitely liked Part One way more as its general vibe (creepy seaside town in the winter) was more my cup of tea, but I enjoyed watching Part Two, as well. Aliens have their own appeal, I guess.
So if you have not joined the hype yet or you just have stopped watching, I recommend to give AHS another go.
Short Overview
AHS: Murder House: After some unpleasant events, the Harmon family decides to move from LA to Boston, only to find out that their new mantion is haunted by the spirits of the former residents and their victims.
AHS: Double Feature:
Part one: A small beach town seems like the perfect inspiration spot for a struggling author, his pregnant wife, and their daughter to settle in. Until its residents show their true faces, that is.
Part Two: Set in the golden age of UFO sightings, the second part definitely gives us a grim idea of what the future might hold.
3. Chilling Adventures of Sabrina

Although Chilling Adventures of Sabrina might not be the scariest show out there, it for sure gives off those Halloween vibes. The whole dark and gloomy aesthetic, mixed with interesting plot, and a modern twist on the witchy story which we all know and love, makes the show a perfect binge for spooky season. I was sincerely surprised when Netflix cancelled the series and still renewed the other one from the same universe – Riverdale, which is the inferior of the two, if you ask me. And Karen Shipka’s acting is just superb, not to mention what an eye-candy Gavin Leatherwood (who plays Nick) is.
Short Overview
A half-witch, half-human Sabrina Spellman has to cope with her dual nature, while fighting the evil forces that threaten her family, friends, and the whole world as we know it.
2. Light as a Feather

This was one of the most original series I’ve watched in recent years not only in the horror genre, but as a whole. The plot is fit for a movie and I wish the episodes were not only 30-minute long. I binged the whole first season probably in a day and was left hoping for a second one. This show is the perfect series marathon you can organize for yourself on Halloween day.
Short Overview
The show is a dark spin of the popular game “Light as a feather, stiff as a board”. It is focused on a group of teenagers that start to die off the exact same way, predicted during the game. Could it be a coincidence or is it a dark curse?
1. The Haunting of Hill House

If I should think of one show that has a great cast, is undoubtedly surprising and original, but also scary as hell, then it should be The Haunting of Hill House. It is probably one of the best shows I’ve ever encountered and after finishing the first episode I couldn’t stop watching. I didn’t sleep, I didn’t eat. I was glued to my laptop and this show. I was not disappointed even by one single detail and the only problem I had with it was that there were only 10 episodes – I just wanted more!
The continuation of the show – The Haunting of Bly Manor, was not bad either, but it was just impossible to compare. It was a slightly more original spin of the book The Turn of the Screw, but nothing to blow my mind. Like Hill House did.
That is why it is Number One on my list of scary series. And around the top of my “Best Series Ever” list.
Short Review
Flashing between the present and the past, a group of siblings who, as children, grew up in a haunted manor, have to confront the ghosts of their past, some of which are actually lurking in the shadows of Hill House.
