The Boy: A Thriller Worth Watching

After a spontaneous decision to go to the movies with my boyfriend and checking what the movie theaters in Thessaloniki have to offer, we decided to see The Boy – an American-Chinese-Canadian psychological horror.

After watching the trailer, we were sure that what we are getting into is just another ghost story with haunted houses, diseased children and creepy dolls. What we saw was a little bit more complicated that that.

The story line revolves around a young woman from the States – Greta, who, in order to escape an abusive relationship, moves to England and accepts an extremely well paid job as a nanny. What she is bound to discover, though, is that she has to babysit… a doll. Even creeper than that is the fact it is treated like a living child by its “parents”. After accepting the situation as a joke at first, Greta realizes that her employees may not be as crazy as they seem.

I don’t want to spoil the movie for those of you who haven’t seen it yet, but, as a horror fan, I was starting to get a little sick of the same story repeated over and over again. This thriller is nothing like that. Not only there are some moments that can make you jump, but also the ending is really surprising and unexpected. If you have seen Hide and Seek or The Orphan, prepare for a final of the same caliber.

Although the film received mixed to negative reviews from the critics, me and my boyfriend genuinely liked the plot, cast and fresh ending especially. Even if it needs a few perks to be worked on, it deserves to be given a chance.

The Big Three to Win 11 Oscars

In the night of the most important event for the film industry – the Academy Awards, I would like to take a walk down memory lane and to commemorate the biggest winners so far. Those three movies have not only kept the audience on the edge of their chairs, but have also won the most Oscars in the movie history – 11 golden trophies.

Ben-Hur (1959)
One of the biggest Hollywood masterpieces – Ben-Hur, is an epic historic drama, set in AD 26, Jerusalem. The movie had the largest budget ($ 15.175 million) as well as the biggest set build for a movie production at the time. It is the first movie to win a record number of 11 Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor in a Leading Role, Best Actor in a Supporting Role, and Best Cinematography.
I haven’t watched that one but it is definitely near the top of my list, as it received overwhelmingly positive reviews upon its release and today is considered to be one of the greatest movies ever made.
Titanic (1997)
Who can forget the breathtaking love story between the Rose and Jack, or the scene on the nose of Titanic, or the moment when the ship breaks into two and sinks into the icy water?
The production of the movie began 2 years before the release – in 1995, when the director James Cameron shot footage of the actual sank ship. As Ben-Hur, Titanic was also the most expensive movie made at the time with a budget of approximately $200 million. It was nominated for 14 Oscars and won 11, including the awards for Best Movie and Best Director.
So if you still haven’t watch the young Leonardo DiCaprio in his most famous role, I strongly recommend you to do so and wish him good luck for tonight’s Oscar battle.
The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (2003)
“One ring rules them all…” This statement was true for the 76th Academy Awards, where the movie won all 11 Oscars for which it was nominated, therefor breaking the record for highest Oscar sweep. If that is not impressive enough, The Return of the King is the first and only fantasy film and the second sequel (after The Godfather Part II) to ever win the award for Best Picture.
The other two Lord of the Rings movies were also nominated in this category. So if you are in the mood for something epic, something meaningful, something that can blow your mind this trilogy is the right choice for you. Honestly, I have watched it like 10 times already and it still give me goosebumps.
